Rather than fork out big bucks on visiting a spa, why not try these 10 simple tips and turn your bathroom into a luxurious, relaxing space? Indulge, unwind and dream, all in the comfort of your own home.

1.Towels

Linen Towels - Home Spa

The simplest way to spruce up your bathroom is to buy some new towels. These highly absorbent linen towels look beautiful and feel amazing against your skin, and come in a range of colours to match your decor. If you are doing a wholescale bathroom makeover, use your towels to set the colour scheme - white always looks clean and chic.

2.Bubbles and scrubs

It's worth investing in some top notch bath bubbles and soaks. You can get away with cheap shower products as they are not on your skin for long, but if you are taking a bath you will want products that smell amazing and really pamper your skin. To avoid a jumble of bottles you can decant your products into matching bottles, like these stylish amber ones, and even add your own labels.

A great, and thrifty, way to make a luxurious, soothing bath soak is to mix 2 cups epsom salts with 1/2 cup baking soda and 30 drops of essential oil (lavender, bergamot and peppermint are lovely) and store in a glass jar. This also makes a fabulous gift, if you can bear to part with any.

3. Candles

Candles - Home Spa

For a truly spa-like experience you need the gentle flickering light of a candle. Or ten. Dot them around the room and include a scented candle for extra indulgence. Natural candles are gorgeous and will last for ages.

4. Rainfall shower head

One of the best things about a hotel or spa shower is the blissful way the water falls. If your home shower is more of a sparse, uninspiring trickle simply change the shower head for a rainfall head. You can pick these up at a very reasonable price - we found these for less than $25! Et voila, you can wash away the sleep and stress under your very own raincloud.

5. Add some greenery

If you are short on outside space, or want to bring some natural tranquility into your bathroom, invest in some beautiful plants. You will be amazed at how much fresher and brighter your space will feel, and the plants will also help purify the air. Choose ferns, herbs and succulents in a mix of shapes and sizes, and plant up in pots that match your individual style. Low maintenance gardening and spa-like lushness at your (green) fingertips.

6. Switch up your grotty shower curtain

If your shower curtain is more 'Eugh' than 'Ooh', ditch it. Replace with a stylish drape like these ethically produced stunners from Quiet Town. Or make your own using some top quality linen backed with a clear waterproof liner. Fitting a clear shower curtain is also a cheekily easy way to make your bathroom look bigger if you are pushed for space.

7. Mirrors

Mirrors - Home Spa

If you want your bathroom to look and feel properly luxurious you need to pay attention to the fixtures, like mirrors. This Scandi-style beauty from Ikea looks on trend but also unobtrusively simple. Make sure you can see your whole face in the glass and that the shape of the mirror you choose works with your space.

8. Bath mats

Once you've soaked in your bubble-filled, candle-lit bath you need to step out onto something suitably comfortable. If your bath mats have seen better days, replace them with some fluffy, plump new ones, or go for something spa-inspired like these River Stone mats.

9. Tub caddy

Such a simple yet brilliant bit of kit, a tub caddy will keep books, glasses of wine and beauty products dry and withing easy reach. We love this one from Peg and Awl, but you can make your own bespoke caddy from some reclaimed wood.

10. Looking after guests

Bearing in mind that a bathroom may be the only place a visitor spends time alone in your house, you want to make sure it is as tidy and stylish as possible. What better way to make guests feel spoilt than providing some sumptuous guest towels and personalised, super cool bamboo toothbrushes?

There we have it: 10 achievable ways to spa-rk some new life into your bathroom! Happy soaking...
