Get Crafty with Linen

Whether you're a skilled maker looking for inspiration, or you're new to sewing, here are some fun linen craft projects to make your home even more beautiful. We've used linen as the basis for these crafts, thanks to its versatility and durability, and you can add embellishments as you please. Love pom poms? Want to experiment with different fabrics? Here's some inspiration:

  1. Create a Cosy Bed Canopy

Imagine tucking into bed on a chilly evening and drawing back the canopy, creating a warm cocoon around you. If you fancy making your own bed canopy, this is a great way to bring some of linen's luxury into your home. This would look stunning in a child's bedroom too, giving a sense of security and a focal point without adding extra clutter. The weight of the linen will keep draughts out whilst also being breathable, so you stay comfortable all night long. This tutorial is really simple and doesn't need lots of experience in sewing or crafting.

2.Upholster your furniture

This may be for the more experienced sewer, but there's no better way to revamp an old chair than making a fresh new cover. Get creative with your fabrics, as bespoke upholsterer and fabric curator Elizabeth Rose has done with this stunning re-upholstered mid-century chair (recently shown at London Design Festival's Design Junction). She has used a pop of LinenMe's neon linen fabric to add colour and enhance the fabric's pattern. If upholstery feels too daunting to tackle yourself, you can always find a professional to cover your cushions or furniture.

Making a few simple cushion covers from some new linen fabric (or using up remnants from another project, or an old linen sheet or towel) is a brilliant way to update a room at little cost.

3. Make a linen apron

Protect your clothes and bring some Japanese utility style into your kitchen by making a linen apron. Elegant and simple, this pattern  echoes the practical aprons beloved by women across the centuries, but adds a contemporary urban twist.

4. The Perfect Boxy Tee

Every wardrobe needs a few everyday t-shirts that you can throw on with jeans or dress up for a summer business meeting. These instructions show you how to make your own boxy t-shirt, bringing this simple garment up to date. Using linen as your base fabric will create a soft, flowing texture that works so well with this shape.

5.Make some gifts or storage bags

Use up remnants or spare linen fabric by making little lavender hearts, drawstring bags to stash bathroom clutter or even napkins. You can give these as gifts for loved ones, perhaps wrapping some homemade bread in a special linen cloth you've made, or filling linen bags with bath salts for a home spa treat. Make sure you have a decent pair of scissors, like these dressmaker's shears to avoid wobbly edges or snagging. You want a sharp, crunchy cut to keep things precise.

And if you want something bespoke but just don't have the time or skills to make it yourself, get in touch with the linen experts at LinenMe. Because they have their own manufacturing unit they can make custom sizes in all their products. Need a funny length tablecloth? Want to add monogramming to your bedlinen? Their Design Your Way service will personalise each product according to your individual needs, rather than being driven by the mass market demand.
