Differences of Flat and Fitted Bed Sheets

Nowadays flat sheets and fitted bed sheets are used for the same purpose – to protect the mattress and make smooth surface for lying. The owner of the bed linen has to decide if the bed sheet has to pull snugly over the mattress, so that it cannot be easily pulled off, or it has to fold easily and neatly when not in use – as these are the main differences of these bedding linen pieces.

Flat Sheets

But those seeking truly luxurious sleeping experience and enjoying a traditional way of using bed linen, have to know what flat sheets and fitted sheets were originally used for (and are used, for that matter).

Traditionally, fitted sheets cover the mattress – the elastic band holds them firmly in right place. Their function is to protect the mattress and ensure smooth and soft surface for the sleeping person to lie on. When purchasing fitted sheets, it is important to have the right dimensions of a mattress – the length, the width and the thickness. As fitted sheets must pull snugly over the mattress and not be easily pulled off, the right dimensions matter a lot. The wrong size fitted sheet simply will not be able to go neatly round the corners, and will not stay in place.

The flat sheet, also called the top sheet, originally is placed between the sleeper and the blanket. Its function is to make your bedding more welcoming. It also protects the blanket or the comforter from getting dirty. On warmer nights the flat sheet can be used by itself to cover the sleeper instead of a blanket. The exact size of a flat sheet when purchasing is less important as it is used separately. One can use a queen size flat sheet on a double bed or vice versa.

Although nowadays bed linen sets usually consist of a duvet cover and two pillow cases, bed linen sets of a flat sheet, a fitted sheet and pillow cases are also available to purchase.

Both flat sheets and fitted sheets can be made of all the types of fabrics, but we strongly recommend linen sheets! Benefits of linen bed linen sets are described in this post but to make it short – we love linen sheets as they are soft, breathing, durable and pleasant to skin!

This generally depends on once personal perspective and comfort. If he doesn’t feel comfortable, he will never be going to use both flat and fitted together or if he is lazy enough to change both… 😀
