How to Win at Breakfast in Bed

Why save breakfast in bed for special occasions? We think it’s too good not to make time for as often as possible. What better way to start a busy day than with a quiet, contemplative bowl of something beautiful? And it doesn’t have to be anything grand and extravagant – here’s a few simple hints for making the best breakfast in bed.

Break with your normal routine, celebrate quiet time with a partner, read the paper or make a mental to-do list, accompanied by a steaming cup of coffee, sumptuous sheets and some morning sunshine. You just need enough energy to get to the kitchen and back.

Pay attention to presentation and a plain old cup of coffee can feel like a luxury. Lay your nicest cups and a jar of flowers or a plant on a fancy tray, and you’ve got the perfect start to your day.

Nothing beats a stack of hot, fluffy pancakes. Make the batter the evening before and they will only take a matter of minutes to whip up. Serve topped with juicy berries, a spoonful of creamy yoghurt and a slug of maple syrup. And a gleeful smile.

For something that will really impress the person snoozing beside you, take inspiration from this stunning breakfast. Layer bright patterns of colourful fruit, nuts and seeds onto a humble bowl of muesli or oatmeal. Add a dollop of peanut butter for a contrasting texture and some extra protein.

Bring some playful romance to your breakfast with this loveheart eggy toast: simply cut a heart (or another shape depending on what cutters you’ve got available) from a slice of fresh bread (sourdough works brilliantly). Grill the bread on one side under a grill on on a hot griddle. Once browned, flip the bread and crack an egg into the hole, then return to the heat. Cook the egg as you like it. Don’t discard the cut out piece of bread – instead, smear it with jam or peanut butter and serve next to the eggy toast.

If you aren’t in the mood for cooking but want to make something that feels more special than your normal bowl of cereal, arrange some chopped fruit alongside your bowl on a wooden board. Finish with a nice napkin, pretty spoon and a small bowl of treats.

Simple, beautiful and luscious. Bon appetit!
