Let’s face it – planning a dinner is great, but preparing for it takes a lot of time and effort. The most terrifying and excruciating work that needs to be done before the dinner party is to iron your tablecloths and dozens of napkins. If you are having tough time ironing, maybe you are doing it wrong. When done properly, this work actually doesn’t require a lot of your energy and the results can be quite astonishing – neat lines, no mess at all, that’s how tablecloths should look.
Quality linen napkins are an essential part of a tasteful setting of the table, whether it’s a casual weekend breakfast with spouse, a festive dinner or some stylish party for friends. Sizes and designs of linen napkins have varied greatly over the years and today we have a huge assortment of linen table napkins available.
The function of table napkins is very simple – they are meant to wipe food and drink from the mouth, and they also can be used as a protection for clothing while eating. Napkins – and especially linen napkins as they are extremely absorbent – are also used as coasters when serving a drink, or serve as a dishtowel to soak up small spills of liquids at the table.
As we all probably know well – linen fabric or weave is produced of fiber of the flax plant. Its softness, natural origins, durability and strength, as well as its antifungal and antibacterial properties are the reasons linen fabric is loved by its fans for. And of course there are various linen fabric types – distinguished from each other by the texture and weave pattern.
Damask linen fabric is a type that is woven on a jacquard loom, using a mix of plain and satin weaves. The fibers most often are flat and reversible, and therefore damask fabric has a smooth texture with a reversible pattern. To make the design and pattern stand out, damask usually comes in one color and is usually used for linen napkins, linen tablecloths, linen table runners and other home textile pieces.? A variation of damask is a Venise linen fabric. It is very finely textured and characterized by large floral patterns.??
Plain-woven linen fabric is also called a glass toweling one because of its most common use – wiping glassware. This fabric has typically a checkered or striped pattern of red or blue or both on a white background. This type of linen fabric has a loose weave that makes it more absorbent and better suited for cleaning purposes, but also less durable.? Another variation of plani-woven fabric is Holland linen that is treated with oil and starch, making it opaque and hard for the sunlight to penetrate. It is used in making window shades and lampshades? Cambric linen is also a plain woven linen fabric and probably the thinnest and finest variety of linen fabrics. This gets its name from Cambria, France, where it was first produced. Typically handkerchiefs, lingerie, etc. are made of it? Butcher’s linen is a type of strong plain weave linen which is stiff, coarse and commonly used for heavy-duty clothing such as butcher aprons.
Loosely woven linen fabrics are made this way to make them highly absorbent. They are commonly used for diapers and sanitary towels. One of the varieties of loosely woven fabrics is bird’s eye linen, which is characterized by small geometric patterns that are reminiscent of a bird’s eye. Another variety is called huckaback linen fabric and is commonly produced from a pure linen or blend of cotton and linen. It is usually woven in towel lengths. Loosely woven art linen is produced from hand-twisted yarns and is very smooth.
Sheeting linen is a heavy type and is usually used in the manufacture of sheets. It is being made wide for this purpose. Suits and dresses and other linen clothing can be also made of it.
Toweling is the name that is given for all the types of linen that are suitable to produce towels. It comes in different sizes and towels that are made can be used for a wide range of purposes.
Linen fabric is considered a luxurious one because processing it from the flax plant is a time and effort consuming procedure. And yet the end products are luxurious – usually very strong and gorgeous.
