What are Flat and Fitted Bed Sheets?
When choosing bed linen, question what is the difference between fitted and flat bed sheets rises inevitably. Let’s examine this topic more closely.
As their names imply - flat sheets are flat, they fold easily and neatly; fitted sheets have elastic band around the edges, they are harder to fold and do not lie flat unless pulled over a mattress.
Traditionally, fitted sheets are used to cover the mattress - the elastic holds them neatly in place. The flat sheet, which is also called the top sheet, usually goes over the fitted sheet and comes between the sleeping person and the blanket on top.
The function of a fitted sheet is to protect the mattress and provide a smooth and soft surface for the sleeper to lie on. They are also called bottom sheets. It is important to have a right sized fitted sheet as it has to fit snugly around the corners of the mattress (see picture).
A flat sheet usually is placed over the fitted sheet and tucked in on the sides and bottom, beneath the blanket or comforter. The function of a flat sheet is to make bedding linen welcoming. They also protect the blanket from getting dirty, so it doesn't have to be washed as often. On warmer nights they can be used by themselves - instead of blankets (see picture).
When choosing fitted sheets, the most important thing is to know the right dimensions of your mattress – not only the length and width but also the thickness of a mattress. Fitted sheets must pull snugly over the mattress, so that they cannot be easily pulled off. And that’s why every fitted sheet is made to fit up to certain dimensions – buying the wrong one will cause lots of inconveniences and nuisance - the sheet simply will not be able to round the corners, and will not stay in place. Though, the wrong sized flat sheets can be used successfully (e.g. using a queen size flat sheet on a double bed).
Flat and fitted sheets together with two pillowcases often make bed linen sets and are available to purchase. Although this makes matching your bedding easier, sometimes it is wiser to buy flat and fitted sheets separately as fitted sheets tend to show wear much earlier than flat sheets.
Although there are lots of fabrics bed sheets are made of, we are advocates of pure materials and strongly recommend pure linen sheets for their healthy qualities, softness and durability. Linen bedding is the one that makes you want to dive in, cuddle up and sleep a fortnight!
